What air conditioning actually costs in the UK
Honest, up-to-date price ranges for domestic, commercial and vehicle air conditioning — and the things that move the final quote.
Why prices vary
No two installs are quite the same
Headline prices are useful, but the final quote always depends on your building. We'd rather you understand the levers than be surprised at survey. Here's what makes the biggest difference, and the typical UK ranges we see day to day.
- Pipework length between indoor and outdoor units
- Outdoor unit position (ground, wall, roof, scaffolding)
- Electrical supply and any consumer-unit work
- Brand and controls (basic remote vs Wi-Fi / smart)
- Building type — listed, render, brick or timber-clad
- Number of indoor units served from one outdoor
A quick rule of thumb
For most UK homes, budget around £2,000 per indoor unit for a straightforward install with a sensible mid-range brand. Multi-split systems get cheaper per unit as you add more.
For commercial sites we always survey first — bigger systems are designed around heat loads, layout and use patterns, not picked off a shelf.
